New Cochrane review weighs up the evidence on controversial vaginal prolapse treatments

A common surgery to treat vaginal prolapse using an artificially grafted mesh has more problems than benefits, a new Cochrane review has found.  Women who underwent the operation had high rates of needing repeat surgery due to mesh exposure, bladder injury and urinary incontinence. This week, lead author Dr Christopher Maher took to the airwaves to explain the review findings. You can listen to him discuss the latest evidence with Dr Norman Swan on ABC RN’s Health Report. Chris also explains the research and findings in a detailed article in The Conversation: Common surgery for vaginal prolapse can lead to complications, review shows.

You can find the full review in the Cochrane Library, along with an editorial on the issue by Cindy Farquhar, Co-ordinating Editor of the Cochrane Gynaecology and Fertility Group.
